The devastation of so many urban trees being cut down inspired this story.
This zine was created to honor the Wilora Lake woods in east Charlotte North Carolina - which was rezoned, sold by a church and is destined to be clear cut in early 2027. When efforts to appeal to City Council failed, I held a gratitude service for the woods and a funeral. 30 neighbors joined the gathering to sing, read poems, bring offerings and let the woodland habitat know how much we care and love all the beings there.
Continuing to work with a local plant rescue group, I'm still trying to save plants before the habitat is clear cut next year. This zine is for anyone wanting to honor woodland habitat in danger.
This zine was selected to be in a collection of zines called “Reading the Trees Anthology” and featured in the HyperLocal zine vending machine in the Durham Food Hall in Durham, North Carolina. In the future, you can purchase it here online or there.
All funds from the sales of this zine will go to planting wildlife habitat in the neighborhood where the woods will be lost. Thank you!
